I want to get Buprenorphine because I heard that it can help you quit using heroin, but the pharmacist won't give it to me without a prescription. Why? Because it's a narcotic?

Buprenorphine was labeled as a Class V narcotic in 1985. You cannot get it with a prescription because it has the possibility of being abused if taken improperly.

Dope heads like to shoot it up and thus it can't be sold without a prescription.

It's not considered a narcotic. The government just wants to monitor who the addicts are and making everyone get prescriptions for it is a great way to do that.

It is such a strong drug that it's use has to be monitored. That's why it's considered a narcotic.
