I've been taking opiates for years. I know I feel sick when I haven't had any. One of my friends told me about buprenorphine but I can barely spell it and definitely don't know what it does/treats. What is it used for?

I take it for pain because I have a history of addiction and don't want to completely relapse.

it won't treat anything if you misuse it… actually, my friend relapsed on it after she quit attending NA

buprenorphine is used to treat opioid dependency. When you are addicted to opioids, trying to stop cold turkey can be daunting and dangerous because of withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine will give you a similar, yet weaker feeling as opioids, allowing you to skip the withdrawal while you are tapering down. the treatment only works if you are willing and able to attend counseling and wanting to stop your addiction.
